Where did the 1997 B.Ed. (Primary Education) graduates go?

I. Introduction

The information contained in this paper is extracted from the Graduate Employment Survey of 1997 to answer the following questions about B.Ed. (Primary Education) graduates : -

 

II. Employment Situation in 1997

Out of 43 B.Ed. (Primary Education) graduates, 32 responded to our survey, representing a response rate of 74%. 88% (or 28 graduates) were in full-time employment within six months of graduation. 9.4% (or 3 graduates) were still looking for full-time employment at the time of the survey in December 1997. (Table 1)

III. Time Taken to Secure Employment

Among those graduates who were in full-time employment, 71.4% secured their first job offer before the end of August. The percentage increased to 100% by the end of September. (Figure 1)

IV. Employment Sectors

Most (93% or 26 graduates) of the B.Ed. (Primary Education) graduates were employed in the education sector. 3.6% (or 1 graduate) each joined the civil service and commerce and industry. (Figures 2 & 3)

The remuneration received by the 1997 B.Ed. (Primary Education) graduates is shown in Table 2.

VI. Number of Full-Time Job Offers

39% of the graduates in full-time employment had more than one job offer. 29% reported having received three or more job offers. On average, each graduate received 1.9 job offers, compared with 2.5 last years. (Figure 4)
