. IntroductionThe information contained in this paper is extracted from the Graduate Employment Survey of 1997 to answer the following questions about Philosophy majors : -
II. Employment Situation in 1997
Of the 7 respondents who reported to major in Philosophy, 86% (or 6 graduates) were in full-time employment within six months of graduation. Another 14% (or 1 graduates) went on for further studies. Nil unemployment was reported. (Table 1)

III. Further Studies
One graduate pursued postgraduate studies in the same discipline as his first degree. He took up a Master (coursework) programme in a local tertiary institution. Table 2 shows the academic programme the graduate was engaged in and Table 3 shows the source of finance.

IV. Time Taken to Secure Employment
Among those graduates who were in full-time employment, 83% were able to secure their first job offers before the end of July. The percentage increased to 100% after December 1997. (Figure 1)
V. Employment Sectors
Most (60% or 3 graduates) of the 1997 Philosophy graduates were employed in commerce and industry. 20% (or 1 graduate) each joined the civil service and the education sector. (Figures 2 & 3)

VI. Basic Salary and Gross Income
In general, the average income of the 1997 Philosophy graduates was higher than that of their predecessors in the previous year. (Table 4)

VII. Number of Full-Time Job Offers
67% of the graduates in full-time employment had more than one job offer. 50% reported having received four to eight or more job offers. (Figure 4)
