IntroductionThe information contained in this paper is extracted from the Graduate Employment Survey of 1997 to answer the following questions about Industrial & Manufacturing Systems Engineering majors : -
II. Employment Situation in 1997
Out of 78 Industrial & Manufacturing Systems Engineering graduates, 73 responded to our survey, representing a response rate of 94%. Of these, 88% (or 64 graduates) were in full-time employment within six months of graduation. 6.8% (or 5 graduates) went on for further studies. 5.5% (or 4 graduates) were still looking for full-time employment at the time of the survey. (Table 1)

III. Further Studies
Four graduates pursued postgraduate studies in the same discipline as their first degree. Of those, two graduates were enrolled in local tertiary institutions. Compared with 1996, there were more graduates going on for further studies (6.8% vs 1.6%). Table 2 shows the academic programme pursued and Table 3 shows the source of finance.

IV. Time Taken to Secure Employment
87% of the graduates who were in full-time employment secured their first job offer before the end of September. The figure increased to 100% after December 1997. (Figure 1)

V. Employment Sectors
Most (97% or 62 graduates) of the 1997 graduates were employed in commerce and industry, followed by 1.6% (or 1 graduates) each in civil service and education sector. (Figures 2 & 3)

VI. Basic Salary and Gross Income
The remuneration received by 1997 Industrial & Manufacturing Systems graduates is shown in Table 4.

VII. Number of Full-Time Job Offers
61% of the graduates in full-time employment had more than one job offer. 33% reported having three or more job offers. On average, each graduate received 2.2 job offers. (Figure 4)
