Where did the 1997 Chemistry graduates go?

 

I. Introduction

The information contained in this paper is extracted from the Graduate Employment Survey of 1997 to answer the following questions about Chemistry majors : -

 

II. Employment Situation in 1997

Altogether 103 persons graduated from the University with a B.Sc. degree in Chemistry. Among them, 83 (81%) responded to the survey. Most (63 or 76%) of the Chemistry graduates were in full-time employment within six months of graduation. 6% (or 5 graduates) were still looking for full-time employment at the time of the survey. Another 17% (or 14 graduates) went on for further studies. (Table 1).

III. Further Studies

Ten graduates pursued postgraduate studies in science and one graduate each studied computer science and education. All of them were enrolled in local tertiary institutions. Table 2 shows the academic programmes Chemistry graduates were engaged in and Table 3 shows the source of finance.

IV. Time Taken to Secure Employment

Among those graduates who were in full-time employment. 87% secured their first job offer before the end of September. The figure increased to 100% by December 1997. (Figure 1)

V. Employment Sectors

Most (51 or 84%) of the Chemistry graduates were employed in commerce and industry, followed by 9.8% (or 6 graduates) in education, 3.3% (or 2 graduates) each in civil service and community, social and personal services. (Figures 2 & 3)

VI. Basic Salary and Gross Income

The remuneration received by 1997 Chemistry graduates is shown in Table 4.

VII. Number of Full-Time Job Offers

Of those in full-time employment, 71% had more than one offer. 43% reported having received three or more job offers (Figure 4).
