Where did the 1997 Cert.Chin.Lang. graduates go?

I. Introduction

The information contained in this paper is extracted from the Graduate Employment Survey of 1997 to answer the following questions about Cert. Chin. Lang. graduates : -

 

II. Employment Situation in 1997

Out of 76 Cert.Chin.Lang. graduates, 20 responded to our survey, representing a response rate of 26%. Of these, 25% (or 5 graduates) were in full-time employment within six months of graduation. 20% (or 4 graduates) were still looking for full-time employment at the time of the survey. 20% (or 4 graduates) went on for further studies. Another 35% (or 7 graduates) were not looking for employment for personal reasons. (Table 1)

III. Further Studies

Of the four graduates who pursued further studies, two were enrolled in local tertiary institutions and two studied abroad. Table 2 shows the academic programmes Cert.Chin.Lang. graduates were engaged in and Table 3 shows the source of finance.

IV. Time Taken to Secure Employment

Among those graduates who were in full-time employment, 80% secured their first job offer before the end of May. The percentage increased to 100% by the end of August. (Figure 1)

V. Employment Sectors

Most (75% or 3 graduates) of the Cert.Chin.Lang. graduates each were employed in commerce and industry. The remaining 25% (or 1 graduate) joined the education sector. (Figure 2)

VI. Basic Salary and Gross Income

The remuneration received by the 1997 Cert.Chin.Lang. graduates is shown in Table 4.

VII. Number of Full-Time Job Offers

Of those in full-time employment, 80% of the graduates had more than one job offer. 60% reported having received three to six job offers. On average, each graduate received 3.0 job offers. (Figure 3)
