Where did the 1997 B.S.W. graduates go?

I. Introduction

The information contained in this paper is extracted from the Graduate Employment Survey of 1997 to answer the following questions about B.S.W. graduates : -

 

II. Employment Situation in 1997

Out of 78 B.S.W. graduates, 72 responded to our survey, representing a response rate of 92%. Of these, 85% (or 61 graduates) were in full-time employment within six months of graduation. 13% (or 9 graduates) were still looking for full-time employment at the time of the survey. Another 1.4% (or 1 graduate) went on for further studies. (Table 1)

III. Further Studies

One graduate pursued postgraduate studies in the same discipline as his first degree. He took up a Master (coursework) programme in a local tertiary institution. (Tables 2 & 3)

IV. Time Taken to Secure Employment

Among those who were in full-time employment, 72.% secured their first job offer before the end of September. The percentage increased to 100% by the end of December. (Figure 1)

V. Employment Sectors

44% (or 27 graduates) of the B.S.W. graduates were employed in community, social and personal services, followed by 28% (or 17 graduates) in commerce and industry and 18% (or 11 graduates) in civil service. The remaining 9.8% (or 6 graduates) joined the education sector. (Figures 2 & 3)

VII. Number of Full-Time Job Offers

44% of the B.S.W. graduates in full-time employment had more than one job offer. 11% reported having received three to eight or more job offers. On average, each graduate received 1.8 job offers, same as last year. (Figure 4)
