Where did the 1996 Statistics graduates go?

I.Introduction

The information contained in this paper is extracted from the Graduate Employment Survey of 1996 to answer the following questions about Statistics graduates : -

II. Employment Situation in 1996

Of the 37 respondents who reported to major in Statistics, 27 graduates (73%) were in full-time employment within six months of graduation. 10.8% (or 4 graduates) were still looking for full-time employment at the time of the survey in December 1996. Another 16.2% (or 6 graduates) went on for further studies. (Table 1)

III. Further Studies

Of those who pursued further studies, all of them were enrolled in local tertiary institutions. Table 2 shows the academic programmes they were engaged in and Table 3 shows the source of finance.

IV. Time Taken to Secure Employment

Among those graduates who were in full-time employment, 81% secured their first job offer before the end of September. The figure increased to 96% by the end of December. (Figure 1)

V. Employment Sectors

70% of the 1996 Statistics graduates were employed in commerce & industry, followed by 26% in the education sector and 4% in the community, social & personal services. (Figure 3.)

VI. Basic Salary and Gross Income

The remuneration received by 1996 Statistics graduates is shown in Table 4.

VII.Number of Full-Time Job Offers

67% of the graduates in full-time employment had more than one job offer. 22% reported having received three to eight or more job offers (Figure 4).
