Where did the 1996 Ph.D. graduates go?

I. Introduction

The information contained in this paper is extracted from the Graduate Employment Survey of 1996 to answer the following questions about Ph.D. graduates : -

II. Employment Situation in 1996

Out of 124 Ph.D. graduates, 65 responded to our survey, representing a response rate of 52%. Of these, 89% were in full-time employment within six months of graduation. 1.5% (or 1 graduate) took up further studies. 7.7% (or 5 graduates) were still looking for full-time employment at the time of the survey in December 1996. (Table 1)

III. Further Studies

There was only one respondent (or 2%) who pursued further studies. This graduate took up a Postdoctoral programme in Canada. (Table 3)

IV. Time Taken to Secure Employment

Among those graduates in full-time employment, 87% secured their first job offer before the end of September. The figure increased to 98% by the end of November. (Figure 1)

V. Employment Sectors

67% of the 1996 Ph.D. graduates who were in full-time employment were employed in the education sector, followed by 21% in commerce & industry, 7% in community, social & personal services and 5% in the civil service. (Figure 2)

VI. Basic Salary and Gross Income

The remuneration received by 1996 Ph.D. graduates is shown in Table 4.

55% of the graduates in full-time employment had more than one job offer. (Figure 4)
