Where did the 1996 M.D.S. graduates go?

I. Introduction

The information contained in this paper is extracted from the Graduate Employment Survey of 1996 to answer the following questions about Master of Dental Surgery (M.D.S.) graduates : -

II. Employment Situation in 1996

Out of 15 M.D.S. graduates, 12 responded to our survey, representing a response rate of 80% . Of these, 67% (or 8 graduates) were in full-time employment within six months of graduation. 17% (or 2 graduates) went on for further studies. 17% (or 2 graduates) were still seeking full-time employment at the time of the survey in December 1996. (Table 1)

III. Further Studies

The 2 graduates who pursued further studies studied in local tertiary institutions. Table 2 shows the academic programmes M.D.S. graduates were engaged in & Table 3 shows the source of finance for their studies.

IV. Time Taken to Secure Employment

All the graduates in full-time employment were able to secure employment before the end of September 1996. (Figure 1)

V. Employment Sectors

6 graduates (75%) were employed in the civil service. 13% (or 1 graduate) each joined community, social & personal services and commerce & industry. (Figure 2)

VI. Basic Salary and Gross Income

On average, the 1996 M.D.S. graduates received a higher income than their predecessors in 1995 (Table 2).

VII. Number of Full-Time Job Offers

Of those in full-time employment, 38% had more than one offer (Figure 4).
