Where did the 1996 B. Eng. - Civil & Structural graduates go?

I. Introduction

The information contained in this paper is extracted from the Graduate Employment Survey of 1996 to answer the following questions about Civil & Structural Engineering graduates : -

II. Employment Situation in 1996

Out of 100 Civil & Structural Engineering graduates, 85 responded to our survey, representing a response rate of 85%. Of these, 97% were in full-time employment within six months of graduation. The remaining 3.5% (or 3 graduates) took up further studies. No-one was unemployed. (Table 1)

III. Further Studies

All of the 3 graduates who pursued further studies went to U.K. Table 2 shows the academic programmes they were engaged in and Table 3 shows the source of finance.

IV.Time Taken to Secure Employment

Among those graduates who were in full-time employment, 98% secured their first job offer before the end of August. The percentage increased to 100% by the end of September. (Figure 1)

V. Employment Sectors

79% of the 1996 Civil & Structural graduates were employed in commerce and industry. The remaining 21% joined the civil service. (Figure 2) Compared with other engineering disciplines, civil engineering had the highest percentage of graduates joining the civil service.

VI. Basic Salary and Gross Income

The remuneration received by 1996 Civil & Structural graduates is shown in Table 4.

VII.Number of Full-Time Job Offers

84% of the graduates in full-time employment had more than one job offer. 61% reported having received three to eight or more job offers (Figure 4). Each Civil & Structural Engineering graduate on average received 3.1 job offers, the highest among all curricula..
