Where did the 1996 B.Eng. - Civil & Structural Engineering (Main Stream) graduates go?

I.Introduction

The information contained in this paper is extracted from the Graduate Employment Survey of 1996 to answer the following questions about Civil & Structural Engineering (Main Stream) majors : -

II. Employment Situation in 1996

Of the 77 respondents who reported to major in Civil & Structural Engineering (Main Stream), 75 graduates (97%) were in full-time employment within six months of graduation. 2.6% (or 2 graduates) went on for further studies. No unemployment was reported. (Table 1)

III. Further Studies

The 2 graduates who pursued further studies went to the U.S.A. for a master course in civil and structural engineering (Table 2). Table 3 shows the source of finance for their studies.

IV. Time Taken to Secure Employment

Among those in full-time employment, all were able to secure employment before the end of September 1996. (Figure 1)

V. Employment Sectors

80% of the 1996 Civil & Structural Engineering (main stream) graduates were employed in commerce & industry, followed by 20% in civil service. (Figure 2)

VI. Basic Salary and Gross Income

Table 4 shows the basic salary and gross income that 1996 Civil & Structural Engineering (main stream) graduates received.

85% (or 64) of the graduates in full-time employment had two or more job offers. (Figure 4).
