Where did the 1996 B. Econ. graduates go?

I. Introduction

The information contained in this paper is extracted from the Graduate Employment Survey of 1996 to answer the following questions about B. Econ. graduates : -

II. Employment Situation in 1996

Out of 155 B.Econ. graduates, 120 responded to our survey, representing a response rate of 77%. Of these, 93% were in full-time employment within six months of graduation. 4.2% went on for further studies, and 3.3% were still seeking full-time employment at the time of the survey in December 1996. (Table 1)

III.Further Studies

Of the 5 graduates who pursued further studies, 3 were enrolled in local tertiary institutions while the other 2 students went to Canada and Australia respectively. Table 2 shows the academic programmes pursued and Table 3 shows the source of finance.

IV.Time Taken to Secure Employment

Among those graduates who were in full-time employment, 89% secured their first job offer before the end of September. The figure increased to 100% by December. (Figure 1)

V. Employment Sectors

The largest employment sector for B. Econ. graduates was commerce and industry (77%), followed by civil service (13%) and education (9.1%). Only 1 graduate (0.9%) joined community, social and personal services (Figure 2). Compared with their female counterparts, a higher percentage of male graduates joined commerce and industry (87% vs. 73%). The reverse was true for the civil service (8.1% vs. 15%). (Figure 3)

VI. Basic Salary and Gross Income

In general, the average income of B.Econ. graduates was similar to that of their predecessors in the previous year. (Table 4)

VII.Number of Full-Time Job Offers

62% of the B.Econ. graduates in full-time employment had more than one job offer. In fact, 38% reported having received three or more offers (Figure 4). The average number of job offers was 2.4, compared with 2.2 last year.

VIII. Names of Employers and Job Titles

Among the 111 B.Econ. graduates in full-time employment, 57% worked as business professionals* and 10% as accounting/audit trainees. Their job titles and the names of their employers are listed below.
