Improving your written application

Are you getting interviews? If not, please ask yourself the following questions about your cover letter, resume, and application form:

1. Are they error free?

2. Are they concise and easy to read?

3. Are they clear and specific about which aspect of the job you are suitable for?

4. Are they convincing, i.e. that the reader is persuaded that you can do the job?

5. Are your statements and claims of competence supported by quantitative and qualitative past results?

6. Did you spell out the specific reasons for which you are attracted by the organisation that you are applying to?

Visit the Careers and Placement, CEDARS website for guidance materials.

Ask a friend to proof-read your papers for you.

If you are sure that you have improved your written application to the best of your ability, then take it to the Careers and Placement, CEDARS and book yourself into a workshop for feedback. The coming workshops are scheduled for 4, 6, 8 and 15 Feb. Check out the time and venue at http://www.hku.hk/cepc/events/regist.html.
