P&G - Problem Solving Test - Tips

To : Students attending Procter & Gamble's problem solving test for the post of:

  • Key Account Manager in Customer Service Development Department
  • Team Manager in Customer Service / Logistics
  • Financial Analyst in Finance and Accounting Department
  • Associate Manager in Human Resources Department
  • System Analyst in Information Technology Department

Here are some tips to help you prepare for the test.

On the day of the test...

  • Remember to be punctual.
  • Bring your own calculator, stationery and University Student ID card.

If you cannot take the test...

  • Remember to send apologies to the employer; and
  • Inform the Careers and Placement, CEDARS.

After the test...

  • Please give us your feedback about THIS year's test format. It will help us prepare next year's candidates.

What is the format of the test?
(Information from candidates about problem solving tests in previous years.)

  • Multiple choice.
  • Common logical and analytical problems; similar to other recruitment problem solving tests.
  • Types of questions include:
    • data interpretation - graphs, charts, and data to interpret.
    • calculation - simple mathematical calculations using percentages and equations.
    • English comprehension - similar to Form V or TOFEL standard.
    • Example of data / calculation test question - You were given the cost, revenue, and sales figures of different brands of products and were asked 7 to 8 questions about it.

Major difficulty

  • Not enough time.
  • The questions were very time consuming.
  • Must manage time very well.

How to do well in this test?
(Advice from graduates who have taken the test in previous years)

  • Try to answer as many questions as possible.
  • Points will be added for each correct answer and will not be deducted for incorrect answer. Check your question sheet to see if this is still the case this year.
  • If this is still true, then don't spend too much time on each question. Skip it or make a wild guess if you do not know the answer.
  • Work on the questions which you are best at first. (e.g. if you are good at Maths, do the numerical section first)

General advice

  • Read the questions carefully before looking at the choice of answers.
  • Work as fast as possible while taking care to be accurate.

Dressing for written test

  • Casual wear is acceptable.

Practice

  • A mock problem-solving test given to us by P&G last year is available in the Careers Library for students to practise on their own. Please enquire at the Help Desk.

Purpose of the test

  • Some factors which predict success, such as problem solving skills, are difficult to assess from resumes, application forms, or interviews alone. Thus, P&G assesses problem solving skills by using a standardized test which has been developed and validated by comparing the problem solving skills of P&G employees in relation to their success in fulfilling the requirements of their work.
