Employment History

Police Inspector - Patrol Submit Commander stationing at Sau Mau Ping

Why are you in the Sau Mau Ping Police Force?

Most of the inspector trainees are deployed to uniformed branches after 8-9 months' of training. I am deployed to station at the Sau Mau Ping Branch and will undergo a 4-year internal rotation scheme whereby I will be assigned to work in different departments to be arranged by my superior.

What are your job responsibilities?

Being a commander of a 40-people team, my job responsibilities include management of manpower and supervision of daily operation of my team. I have to manage team discipline and protect teammates' welfare as well as to organize and allocate patrol teams according to the actual situation.

What do you find most challenging at work?

To be the supervisor of many experienced police constables, who are in the age of 30s and 40s is the most challenging task for me. It is challenging when I have to learn from them and monitor their work at the same time.

What is the major satisfaction?

The job has widened my horizon. It is a job that you can see and meet many unexpected challenges. Some examples are dealing with triads and dead bodies.

Moreover, I enjoy the flexibility of the job very much. As long as I finish work within deadlines, I can work out my schedule in any way I find appropriate.

How would be your career path?

It is definitely a promising career to which I will devote at least 10 years or even more.

Based on performance, inspectors will be promoted to senior inspectors after 3 years the earliest. The next promotion normally needs another 12-15 year experience on average and the rank is chief inspector.

Actually, there is a vast diversity of postings in the police force. Other than Operations Bureau and Police Tactical Unit, there are also some administrative postings with a "9am to 5pm" office hours.

How would you describe the culture of the Police Force?

Traditional and bureaucratic. The prospect and promotion are promising if you are willing to work hard.

What kinds of skills or personal traits are needed for the job?

The job requires a high level of communication skills and common sense. Inspectors should have confidence and self-discipline as they have to supervise the experienced police constables. The teammates will not follow your order if you yourself are not disciplined.

Any advice for students who are interested in joining the Police Force?

The seniors do not care much about the academic results. Those who are interested should show his / her determination.

Candidates should prepare examples to show that they meet the requirements set out on the job description.

What were the selection procedures?

There were 5 rounds:

  1. Measurement on Basic Requirements: For a male candidate, one should be at least 163cm tall and weigh 50kg. For female candidates, one should be at least 152cm tall and weigh 42kg.

  2. Preliminary Interview: I was interviewed by a Chief Inspector and a Senior Inspector for 20 minutes.

  3. Written Tests: Chinese Language, English Language and Aptitude Test.

  4. A One-day Non-residential Programme: selection exercises included impromptu talk, group discussion, management exercise, practical leadership exercise and summary presentation.

  5. Final Selection Board: it lasted for 30 minutes and was held in the Police Training School.
